Calm Returns To Bolga SHS After Riots

Calm has returned to the campus of the Bolgatanga Senior High School (SHS) in the Upper East Region after the students last Friday went on the rampage damaging properties of some teachers over the death of their colleague.

Three cars belonging to some teachers were damaged and some bungalows were vandalised.

The students alleged that one of the senior housemasters of the school delayed in granting a first-year student, Master Iliasu Zakaria, an exeat to seek medical treatment at the hospital, leading to his death at the school’s dispensary at 11 a.m. last Friday.

Upon hearing of the demise of their colleague, the students went on the rampage damaging three vehicles belonging to some teachers, including that of the senior housemaster in question and also vandalised some teachers bungalows.

It took the intervention of a combined team of police and military personnel to bring the situation under control.

REGSEC visit

Members of the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC), led by the Regional Minister, Mr Rockson Ayine Bukari, visited the school to inspect the extent of damage after which they addressed the final-year students at the school’s assembly hall.

He appealed to the students to let peace prevail in the school for academic work to go on.

Let peace prevail

“We need peace and security in the school. Your masters are worried because their cars have been destroyed. Let peace prevail, make your teachers happy and the sky will be your limit,” he appealed.

He warned that if there was a breach of the peace they would be asked to go home, which was going to affect them.

The regional minister reminded the students that they were about taking their mock examinations and subsequently the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in February 2018; and would, therefore, need the effort of their teachers to make the grade.

“You are the leadership now, let your juniors emulate you, make sure nothing untoward happens. If something happens you will be held responsible, those of you in this room. The peace of the school is in your hands,” he admonished the final-year students.
