DCE Surprised About Theft on Adomi Bridge; says Police Constantly There

The Asuogyaman District Chief Executive, Samuel Kwame Agyekum, has expressed surprise about the theft of bolts and nuts on the Adomi Bridge at Atimpoku in the Eastern Region.

He said there are police officers constantly on the tollbooth side of the Adomi Bridge so surprised thieves have managed to steal implements on such national property.

The €12.9 million-renovated Adomi Bridge, which links the Eastern and Volta Regions, may soon become a death trap following a habit of people making away with its bolts and nuts that brace the bridge up.

The bridge was in December 2015 reopened to the public after being closed for 22 months for some major rehabilitation works.

The rehabilitation was done with funds secured from the Bank of Austria.

Three years on, checks by Onua FM indicate that 45 of the bolts and nuts have been stolen, compromising the sturdiness of the bridge and thereby risking the lives of commuters.

The rehabilitated bridge was commissioned by John Mahama in December 2015

The situation has been blamed on the non-availability of street lights on the Bridge.

However, the renovated bridge was commissioned with a full complement of street-lights but the situation as observed by Onua FM has changed.

Speaking in an interview with Onua FM’s Yen Sempa hosted by Bright Asempa, the DCE said the District Police Commander, who is also a member of the District Security Council (DISEC), has been tasked to ensure that his men are vigilant on the bridge.

The DISEC Chairman said he has informed the National Security as well because the bridge is a national asset apart from the Ghana Highway Authority, which has refused to rectify the situation.

The Eastern Regional Highway Authority Director for Bridges, one Mr. Koray, refused to pick his call when Yen Sempa contacted him but replied with a text message “sorry, I can’t talk right now”.
