Facelift For Eastern Regional Roads

The current Akufo-Addo-led New Patriotic Party (NPP) has fulfilled one of its major campaign promises of fixing bad roads in some districts and municipalities in the Eastern Region.

The Department of Urban Roads is currently undertaking the rehabilitation of about 150 kilometres of roads in the region as part of the road maintenance programme.

In Koforidua, the regional capital, asphalt overlay and sectional repair works have been undertaken by Messrs Justmoh Construction Limited at the cost of GH?27,447.302.70.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), prior to the 2016 general elections, upgraded some roads in Koforidua, but they developed potholes few months after the elections.

Most of the roads in the East Akim Municipality are under construction.

The contractors are busily working on the Kyebi-Bunso Road, which has also been abandoned over the years by successive governments.

Roads in Nkawkaw, Kwabeng, Apedwa, Suhum, Akim, Oda, Akyem, Akroso, Asamankese, Akuapem, Akropong, Abiriw, Awukugua, Akuapem, Adukrom, Akuapem, Apirede, Abomosu, Kade, Akwatia and Akyem, Akropong are all under construction.

In the Akropong North Municipality, the Amanprobi Bypass Road is being upgraded to link Akropong to Mamfe and Koforidua to help commuters avoid the congested Central Business District of the regional capital.

The Abiriw roads in the Okere District awarded to Messrs Memphis Metropolitan Ltd. at the cost of GH?3,491.350.39 are being upgraded to improve the lives of the residents.

In the Kwahu East District, work has begun on the Tafo, Miaso, Abene, Suminakese, Akwasihu, Sadan and Nkwantanang roads.

The project, which would see the all roads being tarred, is being financed by the Bryan Acheampong Foundation (BAF) as part of the housing and infrastructure programme to help bring relief to people in the area.

Eric Kwakye Darfuor, the Regional Minister, who inspected ongoing projects in the region, expressed satisfaction with the progress of work and said that the projects would be completed on time.

The Regional Director of the Department of Urban Roads, Kofi Nti Appiagyei, on his part, said barring any hitches, the projects would be completed by December 2018 as scheduled.
