Government has rubbished reports that it is planning to abolish single-sex education system in Ghana.
According to the Ministry of Education, such reports are false.
“…This statement is false and must be treated with the contempt it deserves,” a statement from the Education Ministry stated.
There were media reports citing the Minister of State in charge of Tertiary Education, Professor Kwesi Yankah of hinting of plans to abolish single-sex education system.
The report claimed Prof. Yankah made the remark during a familiarization tour to the converted halls at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
The Katanga, Unity and Africa halls which were used by male students have now become mixed halls following a decision by authorities of the university.
“If we continue to perpetuate the exclusive male and exclusive female thing within our setting, in the light of realities, we won’t be helping in the realization of the national development plan,” Prof. Yankah reportedly said.
But a statement signed by the Head of Public Relations Unit at the Ministry of Education, Ekow Vincent, urged the public to disregard such report.
“The attention of the ministry [of Education] has been drawn to an erroneous impression being created in the media landscape after Prof. Kwesi Yankah spoke to the media at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. He is quoted to have said that government is planning on converting all schools in the country to mixed schools. Let me hasten to add that this statement is false and must be treated with the contempt it deserves,” the statement added.

The attention of the ministry has been drawn to an erroneous impression being created in the media landscape after Prof. Kwesi Yankah spoke to the media at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. He is quoted to have said that government is planning on converting all schools in the country to mixed schools.
Let me hasten to add that this statement is false and must be treated with the contempt it deserves. However, government is committed to increasing the numbers as far as female education is concerned especially in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The President Akufo-Addo led government is committed to ensuring that girl child education remains a priority on the developmental agenda of our country.
I want to take this opportunity to admonish all and sundry to bring to the doorsteps of the ministry of education all concerns and doubts for redress.
