Government to embark on demolition exercise – Minister hints

The Minister for Works and Housing, Samuel Atta Akyea has hinted that government is going to undertake a demolition exercise to reduce flooding in the country

He said structures on waterways will be pulled down to save people from dying.

His comment comes on the back of over a dozen people who have died following a few hours of downpour on two different occasions.

Already, the country’s Meteorological Service Department has forecast heavy rains this year as the rainy season nears and the question of our readiness to face such situations comes to mind.

But in a one-on-one interview with Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM’s morning show ‘Kokrokoo’, Thursday, Mr Atta Akyea indicated that apart from the demolition, government has apportioned about GHc200m to construct drains and expand old ones.

“There will be demolition of structures on waterways . . . we can’t say because of human face people should die.”
