A private legal practitioner and member of the parliamentary select committee on legal affairs, who happens to be the member of Parliament for the constituents of Yilo Krobo in the eastern region on the ticket of the largest opposition party, National Democratic Congress, NDC Hon. Lawyer Kofi Amoatey has disclosed that inasmuch as the president, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is in haste to introduce legislation in disbanding vigilantism the attempt is in a good direction.

He added that the president was in haste for presented the bill thorough the Attorney General under a certificate of emergency. He quizzed whether the president had a first hand information of the meeting between the NPP and NDC parties on disbanding their vigilante groups.

In a phone interview with Owurakou Asamoah on the ‘Issues’ on Radio 1FM, 100.7MHZ, on Saturday the 13th of April 2019, he further revealed that aside being a good attempt by the president, the committee argued that the bill cannot be passed under a certificate of emergency due to one or two reasons.

“We found out that it is a good attempt but there are some clauses we reviewed. First, why should we pass the bill under a certificate of emergency when he (president) has tasked Emile Short commission to look into the matter and we have not got any recommendations. Again, asking NPP and NDC to sit on the same issue without knowing their recommendations does not merit the bill to be under a certificate of emergency”, lawyer said.

Objectively, Lawyer Amoatey said he together with his other colleagues in the Parliament’s legal team expressed their own opinions outside their party even though they are NDC members.

The president of Ghana, through the Attorney General presented a bill under a certificate of emergency to Parliament to help disband the political vigilantism even though he said in the state of the Nation’s address in February that of the two political parties fail in amicably disbanding the vigilante groups, he will be forced to institue a legislation to disband the groups.
