Stadia will be ready for WAFU tourney – NSA

Director General for the National Sports Authority (NSA) Robert Sarfo Mensah has said that both the Cape Coast and Essipong stadia will be ready for the West Africa Football Union (WAFU) tournament in the country.

There have been growing concerns over the readiness of these state facilities to host the competition but the NSA boss told Class Sports there was nothing to worry about.

“Cape Coast stadium is in the best shape because it is relatively new but with Essipong there are a few challenges but we are fixing them. With the issue of the scoreboard, we’ll be able to work within the timeframe given. We are looking at the elevator, we are looking at the reserve bench, there are some few issues and some little plumbing works and work will start this week,” he stated.

He noted that rehabilitation of the facilities will be financed by Fox Sports, headline sponsors of the competitions. “The good news is that Fox Sports is supporting us to fix these facilities as part of their responsibility for sponsoring the tournament. So they will help us fix the elevator, some electrical works and per the timeline, I’m sure we will be able to finish on time…”

Former Ghanaian International Anthony Baffoe called on organisers to put in place the very best of facilities with pitches top on the agenda.

“We need better pitches, we need better training grounds and we need professionals to manage the stadia,” he noted.

The tournament will be staged from September 9 – 22 at the Western and Central regional capitals, respectively.
