Students join forces to fight Amewu over GSSM closure

Major student unions in the country have resolved to get the Lands and Natural Resources Minister, John-Peter Amewu, to backtrack on his decision to close down the School of Surveying and Mapping.

Mr Amewu ordered the closure of the school following a demonstration by students against suspected sale of the school’s lands by the Land Commission.

Mr Amewu asked the Commission to re-assign staff of the School while ordering students to vacate the campus and hostels. But this did not go down well with the students, who met the minister last Friday to talk him to backtrack on his order.

This seemed to have failed. On Monday, May 15, leadership of Ghana Union of Professional Students (GUPS), National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), University Students Association of Ghana (USAG), Ghana National Union of Technical Students (GNUTS) and Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG) resolved to petition President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo over the issue.

According to them, the School should not be closed as ordered by the minister. The petition will be sent on Wednesday, May 17. But it will be preceded by a press conference to explain the reasons backing their position.
