Vegetable Farmers Lament Over Poor Harvest During Dry Season

Vegetable farmers at Nkurakan in the Yilo Krobo Municipality of the Eastern region have noted that farming in the dry seasons has always come to them as periods of major difficulties that confront them as vegetable farmers.

Mr. Daniel Tetteh, a vegetable farmer who spoke on behalf of the Nkurakan vegetable farmers made the remarks in an interview with Rite Fm’s Akuafo Sesen on Thursday morning with Krobea Asante.

Mr. Tetteh who cultivates more than four acres of vegetable plantation enumerated some of the challenges they face as vegetable farmers during the dry season particularly in his locality and elsewhere around the country.

According to him, vegetables such as cucumber, okra, green pepper and others need consistent or regular watering in order to survive the dry season which is not favorable for their cultivation.

This, he laments is despite the fact that there is always ready market for their produce both locally and internationally. Unfortunately, demand outstrips production during the dry season as a result of poor harvest due to the absence of the rains.

Mr. Tetteh therefore appealed to all stakeholders in the farming sector but particularly the government as a major stakeholder to support them with credit facilities such as loans, boreholes and pumping machines to curtail the irrigation problem they face, especially the vegetable farmers, during dry season.
