Mr. George Asamoah Amankwah has waded into the controversy surrounding the criteria for awarding the country’s best farmers. The 2014 national best farmer in an interview with Rite news dispelled rumours that that these criteria are always shrouded in untoward considerations which always left some farmers, industry players and observers peeved and dissatisfied.

The concerns among others hinge around what informs the decisions of the various planning committees ‘to award rich farmers and leaving the poor peasant farmers,’ concerns which Mr. Amankwah described as ‘irrelevant.’

He argued strongly that the select committee always followed strictly the given criteria and which mandates it to follow in its responsibility of selecting the best farmer.

Highlighting some of the criteria, the former best farmer indicated it calls for a farmer who pays regular visits to his farm as well as one who is into crop production, animal, rearing, mushroom cultivation among others.

In all, he contends that for a farmer to qualify for consideration, they must meet at least 60% of the criteria, arguing that it’s impossible for the select committee to pick and award farmers who don’t meet all these set criteria.

To him, the perception that best farmers are selected along politics lines must be discarded.
