Hundreds of customers of the non-operational Fanteakwa Rural Bank clad in “Red and Black” colours took to the streets of Koforidua, the Eastern Regional Capital, on Wednesday, to register their displeasure at the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the bank, Hon. Kwabena Amankwah Asiamah who doubles as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Fanteakwa North and to also welcome Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo  into the region as part of his Eastern Regional campaign tour.

The demonstrators alleged that the Hon. MP used their monies with bank to fund the campaign of the main opposition party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2012, that is why Nana Addo has not spoken about their plight.

They wondered the amount of pressure the NPP has put on the government when the DKM scandal was reported but have turned deaf ears to theirs and that convince them to believe the allegation is true therefore the money is with the NPP and Nana Addo.

The demonstrators also want Nana Akufo Addo to come out clear on the allegation that, their deposits were loaned to fund his campaign in 2012 with the intention of repaying if the NPP had won, a move that led to the collapse of the bank.

The bank which had branches in Koforidua, Osiem, Suhum, Anyinam and with its headquarters in Begoro is estimated to have about 1000 customers gone bankrupt due to the scandal. This development has led to deaths, students dropping out of school and mental sickness.
“I am a farmer and a customer of the bank since 2009 and have deposited GHS27,345.00. when I went there to withdraw my money after 2012 the bank was closed. We need our money because we are hustlers” Solomon Tetteh, a victim, told Radio1 reporter.
The victims who are mostly farmers, traders, drivers, teachers, and small scale miners have between five hundred Ghana cedis (GHS500.00) and twenty-seven thousand Ghana cedis (GHS27, 000.00) still locked up at the custody of the collapsed bank.
According to the victims the bank owes its customers over 5 million Ghana cedis
The victims led by Joshua Norbi presented their petition to the Regional Minister which was received on her behalf by the Chief Director at the Regional Co-ordinating Council for a possible redress.
All efforts to get a response from Hon. Kwabena Amankwah Asiamah on the story have proved futile at the time of filing this report.
