The CEO of SuhCare Shea Butter, Madam Rita Quist-Therson has revealedthat Shea butter which is classified and called by many as a wonder tree due to its numerous health benefits, can help reduce the high spread of skin cancer among most Ghanaians in the country.
According to Madam Therson, Shea butter which is extracted from Shea nuts is not a new product to Ghanaians but is known as an indigenous skin care product or pomade which was used by our forefathers.
The Chief-executive-officer who was speaking in an interview with Krobea Asante on the Rite Morning Ride on Thursday however lamented that today’s world has trampled on the use and benefits of Shea butter due to modernization.
‘Modernization has taken over the minds of Ghanaians on Shea butter and therefore sidelining its use and switching over to foreign lightening creams which are chemically based and harmful to the skin which is the cause of skin cancer,’ Miss Therson lamented.
She explained further that Shea butter began to be classified as a wonder tree due to its numerous uses and benefits and which has no side effects. She further elaborated on its uses including the manufacture of soap, hair pomade, body lotion and cooking oil which are all useful to the skin and body.
She noted that Ghana was privileged to have abundant shea trees, a situation that is not the case in most parts of the world.
She added that shea butter being the raw material in the production of many skin care products has earned it the nick-name ‘liquid gold’ or ‘women’s gold.’
She wondered why Ghana isn’t reaping much benefit from shea butter when a neighbouring country like Burkina Faso is making so much income out of it and therefore called on stakeholders to support small companies to light as they help boost the country’s economy.
