The Deputy Agric Engineering Officer at the Ministry Of Food And Agriculture, MOFA, Mr. Samuel Kwadwo Somoah has highlighted some technologies to be applied by farmers during the dry season farming as far as irrigation is concerned.
This arises out of the fact that drought arising in the aftermath of the dry seasons have largely hinged on the absence of the right technologies to confront the situation.
According to Mr. Somoah, these technologies are critical in overcoming the several challenges that confront farmers during the dry season.
The agric engineer who was speaking on the Akuafo Se sen segment of Rite FM’s flagship programme, Morning Ride, outlined some of the technologies required for dry season farming.

According to him, one such technology is the digging of wells on the farms in order to access water for irrigation purposes. He also mentioned the provision of water pumps to drill water from the ground and also the creation of bore holes and storage of water in tanks, all for irrigation purposes.
According to him the most important elements of farming is land and water and there are only two ways of having access to water. These he mentioned as rain and also underground water sources.
Mr. Somoah however stressed that farmers have only one option of a source of water during the dry season which is to rely on the underground water for irrigation. He however noted that this needs proper planning before the farming activity itself.
He however advised against the practice of covering the soil with foliage to prevent water from drying up from the soil as it can lead to fire outbreak especially during dry and hamarttan season.
