President Nana Akufo-Addo has revoked the appointments of all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) with immediate effect. A letter sighted by Citi News, and addressed to all MMDCEs from the Ministry of Local Government, directed all MMDCEs to hand over their relevant duties to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Coordinating Directors (MMDCDs).
“By virtue of article 243 (3)(b) of the Constitution of the Republic, H.E the President of the Republic has revoked the appointment of all MMDCEs with immediate effect,” the letter said.
The letter signed by the Local Government Minister nominee, Hajia Alima Mahama, indicated that the Regional Coordinating Directors (RCDs) are to ensure the smooth handover as directed. President Akufo-Addo has already indicated that Ghanaians will start electing their MMDCEs in 2018.
The election of MMDCEs was one of the promises of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the build up to its election victory in 2016.
