COUNCIL OF STATE NOT RUBBER STAMP – NANA MIREKU SOMUAH

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Monday 27 February sworn into office members of the Council of State at the Banquet Hall, State House. The Council comprises 11 persons nominated by the president and 14 elected regional representatives.
Contrary to the widely held belief that members of the Council of State, as appointees of the Executive, will be rubber stamp, Nana Mireku Somuah Nyanpong III has dismissed that perception.
Nana Mireku Somuah Nyanpong III a member of the council of state and chief of Kwahu Asakraka said the council of state appointed by the president will not’ rubber stamp’.
According to him, Ghana has a vigorous Council of State that can boast of members that extol their own virtues, by deciding for the President as and when necessary.

He said members of the Council of State are alert to their task, adding that they challenge the President when the need arises, and should not be seen as instruments in the hands of the executive.
He said this when speaking to Captain Kofi Owusu on Radio1 Breakfast Show ‘Susubiribi’.
“The President is wise, and he will not appoint anyhow but people who can discharge their work effectively”, he said.
The Council of State is enjoined by Ghana’s 1992 Constitution (Reference Chapter 9, Article 89) to “counsel the President in the performance of his functions”. The Council is required to “consider and advise the President or any other authority in respect of any appointment which is required by the constitution or any other law to be made in accordance with the advice of, or in consultation with the Council…” The council, upon request or on its own initiative is to “consider and make recommendations on any matter being considered or dealt with by the President, a Minister of State, or any other authority established by the Constitution.
The President expressed confidence in the Council of State to give him advise that will directly or indirectly affect the livelihoods of Ghanaians.
