Majority leader and Minster of Parliamentary Affairs, Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu has suggested that uncontrolled activities of vigilante groups are turning Ghana into an anarchical state with no order and that is tarnishing the image of NPP.

A vigilante group, Delta Force, believed to be affiliated to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), on Friday attacked Mr. George Agyei, the newly appointed Ashanti Regional security coordinator. The group has been vocal in their resistance of the appointment of Mr. Agyei and has insisted, a party person ought to occupy the post.

The group destroyed state property and manhandled the appointee in a bloody attack when they stormed the premises of the Regional Coordinating Council.

According to the group, they cannot work with Mr. Adjei since he did not contribute to the party’s electoral success in the 2016.

A video of the attack which went viral on social media has ignited concern over the increasing spate of illegal attack and take-over of government properties by vigilante groups, with some questioning the president’s commitment to addressing such issues due to his silence on the matter.

But speaking on Radio 1 Breakfast Show ‘Susubiribi’ hosted by Captain Kofi Owusu, the Majority Leader said Delta Force is tarnishing the image of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and therefore called on the security agencies to put in place mitigating measures to deal with these groups before they put the party into a worse state.

Many Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and political parties including the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have called on the president to deal more firmly and decisively with the situation.

The development has forced the former Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur to write to the President, Nana Akufo-Addo to as a matter of urgency work to end the unlawful activities the illegal groups.
