GPRTU commend government for indefinite suspension of towing levy

The implementation of the much talked about National Towing Programme which was scheduled to take effect from 1st July has been suspended indefinitely, This is to a directive given to National Road Safety Campaign (NRSC) by the roads and transport minister Kwaku Ofori Asiamah. This is aimed at given stakeholders opportunity to address public concerns.

Radio 1 news correspondent Nana Addo and Adjetey Cornelious stepped out to sought the opinion of some stakeholders in the transport industry, In an interview with the chairman of Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) Pastor Johnson Kyere, he commended the minister for suspending the towing levy and adding  human face to the implementation of the towing levy. He appealed to drivers to exercise restraint as well.

” It has become imperative for government to engage stakeholders to come into terms with it before its implementation, we are very glad, we know the government will not do things that will hamper the development of the country, but will urged drivers to exercise restraint as well.” he stated.

Also  the chairman of the Heritage Transport union of Ghana, Yusif Seidu Konate,  said, it is better, the implementation did not take effect, it could have tarnished  the image of the Nana Akuffo Addo led administration, and will make him unpopular.

According  to him if the government could have  implement  the towing policy, it could have been implemented on the individuals . Mr. Yusif suggest that, it would be better if the local government implement it, so that it will generate revenue for development in their respective funds.

” This particular levy could have had bad effect on the individual, it better the government have suspended it. It would be better if the local government implement it, to help generate revenue for the development of their respective funds.” he stressed.

He urged the government to engage all stakeholders in the transport industry to enhance peaceful coexistence.
