Schools in the Ketu South district of the Volta Region have closed temporarily due to Sunday’s high tides that submerged most parts of the district and displaced hundreds of residents.
The tidal waves destroyed the homes of many residents in Agavedzi and Blekusu.
The displaced residents said the strong tidal current has been an annual ritual affecting most residents along the coast, but the intensity of the last incident was unexpected as they pleaded for government support.
The Dufia of Agavedzi, Togbui Akponoguia, appealed to government for the construction of sea defence to protect the coast from the ravages of the waves.
At least 240 homes were submerged by the tides.
But the Volta Region was not the only victim. Other coastal areas such as Cape Coast, Ankaful, and Saltpond in the Central Region were also hit hard. Fishermen in those areas have been heavily affected.
