E/R: 2.2k slabs of marijuana impounded

Police in the Eastern Region have impounded some 33 fertiliser sacks of 2,228 slabs of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.
The slabs were seized on July 28 upon a tip-off.
A patrol team acting upon intelligence tracked three young men who were in the process of loading the suspected narcotics into a Kia Rhino Truck at Kpong near Akosombo for transportation to Tema port.
The team proceeded to the scene at Kpong laid ambush and arrested 34-year-old Joseph Sarpong.
However, his two other accomplices managed to escape, abandoning the truck with registration number GN 4587-15 which contained fertiliser sacks concealed under 100 bags of Global Ice sachet water.
The truck, together with the suspect, was sent to the Regional Police Headquarters for further investigation after which a thorough search conducted uncovered eight white fertiliser sacks each containing 80 compressed slabs; 21 large fertiliser sacks concealed in big black polythene bags each containing 68 slabs, and four mini fertiliser sacks also containing 40 slabs each of compressed dried leaves, all suspected to be Indian hemp.
1,428 of the slabs have been marked “USA” in red ink, an indication that they were meant for export.
