The New Patriotic Party (NPP) government must consider the inclusion of organic farming in the Planting for Food and Jobs programme which is expected to commence this year, 2016 National Best Maize Farmer, Kofi Vinyo has said.

Mr Vinyo told Accra FM’s Sammy Adjei that organic farming is the best for good health and economic wellbeing of Ghanaians as crops grown through conventionally pose health risks.

Additionally, he said Ghana would make a lot of money on the international market if farmers are encouraged to venture into organic farming because of the premium price of organic produce on the international market.

The strongly advocates organic farming at least on a pilot basis to measure its benefits and it’s potential.

For him, government should also consider abolishment of the use of “hard chemicals” in agriculture to promote a healthier, sustainable and cost-effective methods in ensuring food security.

He observed that application of chemicals contaminates farm produce and Ghana “will be doomed sooner than later” as the increasing trend of abuse of agricultural chemicals is worrying.
