Flooding affect 6,091 people and 830 houses in the Eastern region

The Eastern Regional Director for National Management Organisation (NADMO) Kwame Appiah Kodua has cautioned people living in flood prone zones to evacuate to a safe haven before disaster strike. The metrological services has warned of eminent heavy rains in August and September this year, this was in his speech in an interview with Radio 1 at Bunso in the Eastern region.

He said out of twenty six districts, enumerating some as Afram plains south, Ayensuano, Birim South, Kwahu, Birim central, New Juaben, Upper west Akyem, Upper Manya Krobo among others in the Eastern region this year alone, has experienced a number of flooding which has affected six thousand nine hundred and one (6091) victims and eight hundred and thirty three houses.

According to him, short terms measures to assuage the impact of flooding won’t be a better solution. His outfit is doing things possible to ensure safety for those affected.

”NADMO compliance unit and rescue team will be deployed to compel  those living in flood area to relocate for their safety, the system will also implored long term measures to help solve the situation.” he emphasized.

He said a long term measure is going to be established and with that, NADMO will liaise with coordinating council and the municipal assembly to redesign drains and bridges and expand them to avert  re occurrences of flood.

Kwame Kodua said, currently his outfit is handicapped and has not been able to give relief items to the victims. ”NADMO doesn’t have capacity to pay for the cost of the destruction but the items are to ameliorate the affect on them.” he stated.

He appealed to stakeholders, corporate bodies, philanthropist, individuals and nongovernmental organisations to come to their aid of the regional NADMO office to enable it give a relief items to the flood victims.

He implored the general public to desist from indiscriminate disposal of solid and liquid waste to reduce flooding in our communities.
