A/R: Farmers And Traders Stranded As A Result Of Bad Road

Farmers and trades are said to have locked up at back of bridge that link from Worompong in the Atwima Nwabiagya district and Bonsua in the offinso municipality in the Ashanti Region as a result of heavy rains which have rendered roads in impassable. In some of the cocoa growing communities, Farmers had been compelled by the circumstances to carry their food crops, cocoa and other items on their heads travelling miles to market centres.
The worst affect part are Worompong, Atamso, Adagya, Baaso, Bangalo, Boahenkwa no 1and 2 in the Atwima Nwabiagya district that links to Kansre, Wawase, Amankwatiakrom, Sabronom, Ode, Mansra in the Offinso municipality.
”In the case of Worompong in the Atwima Nwabiagya district, which seems to have been cut-off from the district, the farmers sometimes throws away their cocoa beans, plantains, maize, yam, cassava and other vegetables as a result of it been contaminated at the back of the bridge, because they cannot cross it and no vehicle, not even Aboboyaa or motor will dare to cross.” the report revealed.
In an interview with some of the famers by Radio 1 news correspondent, Akwadaa Nyame, they said, they do not have access to potable water and other social amenities, and they have been cut-off from the rest of the country’s developments projects due to the bad nature of their road.

Farmers in the cocoa growing communities revealed that some communities had to rely on heavy built men who know how to swim to carry them on their back to cross the broken bridges after paying them an amount of Ghs 10 to Ghs 20 before connecting them from Worompong to offinso.
Also a visit to Offinso market which is near to them despite the town is within the Atwima Nwabiagya district, which relies on food supply from those affected communities, indicated that price of food had increase. Some of the market women attributed the high price to high transport fares as a result of the bad nature of the road.
The assembly members of the area, Hon. Paul Mbawini and Hon. Annor Douglas who shared a boundary said, they have reported to their various district assemblies but don’t know when they will come to their aid.
Meanwhile, the District Chief Executive for Atwima Nwabiagya district, Hon Micheal Amoah-Awuku said, he is not happy about the transportation difficulties confronting the people in the area and promise to find a lasting solution to it.
