The Greater Accra wing of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has threatened to stop the payment and filling of tax returns by end of October this year if what they describe as frustrations within the business environment remains unaddressed.
Top of their concern is the issue of foreign nationals breaching stipulations of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) legislation which debars them from engaging in retail business.
General Secretary for the Union, Samuel Poku, at a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, 19 September 2017 said if foreigners are not prevented from competing in business with Ghanaians, they will cease paying taxes.
“GUTA Greater Accra Region is ever ready to defend its position, reason being that traders will not pay taxes and we mean it,” he stated.
“They shouldn’t underestimate us, we mean what we say so if policy makers are listening, there is a serious thing looming and if they have ears they should sit up now. Traders will not pay taxes if foreigners continue their unlawful trading activities in our various markets which the laws of the land prohibit,” he added.
