RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner was forced to wear ear plugs before asking to be substituted due to “circulation problems” in their 2-0 defeat to Besiktas in the Champions League.

The 21-year-old was pictured with the ear plugs and also holding his hands to his ears before he was taken off in the 32nd minute of the Group G game which saw a hostile atmosphere inside the Vodafone Arena in Istanbul.

RB Leipzig said the German international had suffered from circulation problems during the game but “is already better”.

The Bundesliga side’s Twitter page commented on the level of noise generated by the home supporters during the match, which saw goals from Ryan Babel and Anderson Talisca give the hosts the win, with floodlight failure also seeing the game delayed for 12 minutes.

Manager Ralph Hasenhuttl admitted the atmosphere had affected his team and was “too much for some” in what was RB Leipzig’s first away fixture in the Champions League.

Hasenhuttl said: “He [Werner] asked to come off so I took him off. It is impossible to prepare your team for an atmosphere like this. There was a deafening noise [and] at the start of the game we were a bit affected.

“For me, as coach, it is important to see who I can rely on in moments like these, who is prepared to defend himself against what is going on on the pitch.

He said: “We will go to Istanbul without fear, Besiktas is not a Bayern Munich or Dortmund.”
