The Ghana Drivers and Car Owners Association has given government up to the end of November this year to regulate Uber’s operations in the country or they will implement a well-thought-out plan where government will lose taxes paid by commercial drivers to the state.

According to the Association, Uber is killing their business and their [Uber] operations in the country is illegal as it is against the road traffic regulation Act which stipulates that private vehicles cannot be used for commercial purposes.

Speaking on the Executive Breakfast Show (EBS) on Class91.3FM, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Association, Francis Appiah, said government will be the bigger loser if commercial drivers spray their vehicles as private cars for commercial purposes.

He told show host, Moro Awudu, that: “Uber is killing the drivers in this country. They are not paying income tax and road worthy but we ordinary taxi drivers pay income tax, road worthy, AMA embossment, AMA driver’s license and a whole lot, and this Uber don’t pay all these things. Is the transport minister not aware? They know all these things are going on and that people are using private cars for commercial work which is against the road traffic regulation Act, regulation 130.

“I want to say we are giving them two months, if they don’t do anything about this Uber issue, we are planning on it, we have finished everything, it’s just that we are giving them rope. We give them just two months, we will signal all the drivers in this country to spray all the taxis in this country as private cars and government will lose the tax that taxi drivers pay. If we spray our cars private, we’ll just do road worthy and insurance and insurance is cheaper with private cars, so we won’t do our road worthy six months again and we will all use our cars for Uber…”
