Hon. Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, the Agric Minister has given clear indications of greenlights to 1 village – 1 dam to be initiated very soon.
Speaking at the Ministry of Information ‘MEET THE PRESS’ series on Tuesday 26th June 2018, Dr. Afriyie revealed that over 290 villages in the three Northern part of the country will form a pilot for the 1 village – 1 dam initiative which would quick start anytime soon. He said the whole initiative is to help bridge the gap between rainy seasons and dry seasons in the 3 Northern regions.
Delivering his speech, Dr. Afriyie said construction of dams in these identified and selected villages or communities has already commenced. He further said the whole idea behind 1 village – 1 dam is to take water to the people not people to the water.
“During the campaign in 2016, the mantra of one of the big campaign mantras was one village, one dam and that is just about to be initiated. Because in the 60’s and 70’s the concept of irrigation was $100 million irrigation concept where villages come around for water. So one village, one dam is to take water for villages instead of villages going to the water. That is the whole idea. We have identified over 290 locations in the Northern region to form the pilot”, Dr. Afriyie revealed.

However, even as they are eager to execute this herculean task, monetary constraints and lack of requisite resources hamper its execution. He assured the nation of other NGO’s interests in realizing the projects.
Prior to the 2016 elections, one of the mantras of the campaigns of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was one village, one dam mantra. This initiative is to bridge the gap between the period of plenty and the period of scarcity with respect to food production among farmers. In the 3 Northern Regions, farm produce reduce drastically due to lack of adequate water for plants consumption. The NPP promised them one village, one dam to help curb the menace. This message was highly received and by the residents, thereby handing over the mantle of leadership to the NPP in the 2016 poll.
