A reputable Media Establishment in the Eastern Region of Ghana, Radio1FM, 100.7MHZ on Saturday September 22, donated Food items worth GHC 4,000 to the largest Prisons in Ghana; Inarguably the biggest in West Africa – Nsawam Prisons.

The food items comprised of 11 Bags of neatly Packaged Gari, some Cartons of Soft Drinks, 2 Bags of Sugar, 200 Bags of Sachet Water, Soaps, Bag of Maize, Bread, Biscuits, etc.

These Items were presented by Delegations from Radio 1 FM, 100.7MHZ. Each Department in the Media Establishment was represented and the items were Received by Chief Superintendent of Prisons, Rev. Martin Paddi who is the Chapelain together with the Second in command (2IC) of the Nsawam Medium Prisons.

There were various interrogations among the Prison Officers, Media and the leaders of the Inmates- Prisoners. There, it was revealed that Rooms that are supposed to accommodate 800 prisoners are now accommodating over 3,500 Prisoners. Government is spending GH¢ 1•80 per day, which is absolutely insufficient.

The 2IC added that, for them to feed the Prisoners with rice in a day, they would have to cook 24 bags and we can attest to the cost involved. He went on enumerating various challenges and made passionate appeals that need urgent response. He said they have schools in the yard and now they need to provide about GH¢ 11,000 for the Students Registration in the upcoming WASSCE. Another appeal to the general public is to support the prisoners in school with 800 Exercise books.

However, Nsawam Medium Prisons have Shoe Making Centre, T-Roll making Establishment, School; both Basic and Secondary and provide only Draughtsmanship as Technical Education. They equip the Prisoners with Formal and informal education.

They have various religious denominations; The Catholic, Church of Christ, Muslims, SDA, Pentecost and the United Church made up of Methodist, Presby and the other Churches.

The Prison Officers used the opportunity through the media to appeal to the general public to kindly come to their aid anytime possible with the little they can afford.

Meanwhile, Radio 1FM promised to make it an annual program and thanked the numerous generous ones who contributed with money, food items and prayers notably Prophet No Weapon’s Church.
