A former Brong Ahafo Regional Women Organiser of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Nana Adwoa Takyiwaa II is advising persons seeking to lead the party as its flagbearer to focus on their campaigns devoid of attacks.

According to her, it is within the democratic rights of such persons to contest former President John Dramani Mahama who has officially declared his intention to lead the umbrella family into the 2020 elections.

She is however worried about a barrage of attacks targeted at the former president by some flagbearer aspirants aimed at running him down when they are supposed to be telling delegates about their vision for the party and country and why they should be voted for.

“No one has asked you not to contest former President John Dramani Mahama. Go ahead and contest him as flagbearer but do not attack him because he is not your target. Such acts do not augur well for party unity and cohesion”, she observed.

According to her, the former President stands tall and is the only solution to the current economic crises that have bedeviled the country but want his contenders to be civil and polite in the campaigns devoid of attacks on his person since that is below the belt.

“The former president might need the services of his contenders in one way or the other should he win the 2020 polls but their respective utterances might turn out to be haunting them. They should take a clue from H.E Nana Addo and Hon Alan K. Kyeremanteng. Their persistent attacks on his personality are rather giving the NPP ammunition to attack him”, she stressed.

Nana Adwoa Takyiwaa II expressed hope that at the end of the primaries, the NDC as a party will emerge victorious to become a formidable force to reckon with in order to win back power at the 2020 polls cautioning against bickering and internal squabble that have the potential of disintegrating the party.

“The flagbearer aspirants must show the way that their interest is the party and not individuals by ceasing to insult or attack the former president who has only registered his intent to the lead the NDC into the 2020 polls”, she stressed.

Former President John Dramani Mahama formally declared his intention to contest the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential primaries last month.

His letter of intent was presented to the NDC on his behalf by a delegation led by Former Ambassador, Daniel Ohene Agyekum at the NDC headquarters weeks ago.

Mr. Mahama joins other high profile candidates within the NDC including the former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Sylvester Mensah, and Nadowli Kaleo MP, Alban Bagbin.

Other candidates are Dr. Ekwow Spio Garbrah; a former Trade and Industry Minister; Former Vice Chancellor of the University for Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Prof. Joshua Alabi, and Cape Coast South MP Kweku Ricketts-Hagan. The NDC has slated December 7, 2018, for the election of its flagbearer for the 2020 presidential election.
