Communications Director of the Ghana Gas Company Limited, Ernest Owusu Bempah, says his outfit has no hand in the country’s current power challenges.

His comment follows a statement by the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) which attributed recent power outages experienced mostly in the capital to a drop in the supply of gas to the Aboadze Thermal Plant in the Western Region.

The development, according to GRIDCo, is responsible for the blackouts during peak periods between 7 pm and 9 pm in recent times.

Supply of power has been erratic over the past couple of days prompting social media discussions of a possible return to the dreaded days of “dumsor,” which crippled business activities for nearly four years.

But reacting to the development, Mr Owusu Bempah discounted media reports that Ghana Gas could not give enough gas to generate the needed capacity of power, stressing that the report was fallacious and misleading.

He added that Tullow Ghana Limited, operators of the FPSO Kwame Nkrumah are facing challenges with their machines, a situation he said has led to a significant reduction in the amount of available gas for the generation of power.

“Ghana Gas cannot be blamed for the current power outages. Our job is to wait for gas from Tullow but unfortunately, Tullow is having issues with their machines which are supposed to generate power and that is why we keep experiencing the recent power outage.

He continued: “That will lead to a significant reduction in terms of the availability of gas for the generation of power at Aboadze”.

The Ghana Gas Communications Director, however, believes alternative arrangements have been made to ensure there is enough power to meet the demand.
