Cocoa farmers in the Atiwa West District in the Eastern Region are complaining bitterly about the deplorable state of the road access to their cocoa farms.
According to them these are the results of illegal mining and small scale mining in the area.
In an interview with Obido Nana Gyasi, farmers bemoaned the state of the road and the cost they incur before bringing cocoa beans from the farms after visiting them.
According to a majority of the farmers the activities of the mining company in the area particularly galamsey and Extra Gold Mining Company have caused them a lot harm, destroyed their roads with the to and fro movement of their heavy trucks but fail to construct them.

They said drivers do not want to even go with them to their farms due to the state of the road. While others hailed the ban on galamsey some also believe halting the activities of Extra Gold or regulating their activities in ensuring sustainability will help avert the deplorable state of the road.
Moreover, they said if proper care is not taken, Cocoa will go extinct in the area for the activities of mining there are very worrying. They therefore advised that the cocoa growing areas must not be given out for concession to avoid the banter between them and the miners.
