The Dean of the Department of Environmental Science at the University College of Agric and Environmental Studies, UCAES, at Bunso in the Eastern Region, Dr Francis Awotwi has appealed to the government to enact policies that would encourage consumption of made in Ghana foods.
He said the culture of Ghanaians also need to be changed in order to patronize made in Ghana foods.
Speaking on the Susubiribi Morning Show on Radio 1FM, 100.7MHZ on Friday the 7th of December 2018, Dr Awotwi told the host, Nana Kwabena Addo that the demand of Ghana foods is very low and all bulge out to the culture of Ghanaians and the adoption of foreign foods.
According to him, government must come out with a strategic plan to enact policies that will help the farmers. He said the farmers day celebration is not enough to entice them since there are numerous farmers in Ghana and just a handful of farmers would be recognised and rewarded. What then happens to the rest.

“Though farmers are happy with the farmers day celebration but that is not what they want. Their roads, storage facilities… need to be attended to”, he said.
The experienced lecturer lamented on the hustle and bustle these farmers are exposed to but get little in return. He therefore urged all Ghanaians to ditch the attitudes of we want foreign foods, and government must also engage the Senior High Schools, SHS to patronise only food stuff grown in Ghana. Government should also build storage facilities for the farmers since a majority of the foods go waste due to lack of storage facilities when a lot are perishable.
He again said when the logistics and personnel needed to improve farm produce are provided the enthusiasm to engage in farming and profits from the produce will increase and that will motivate them more than a single day as a day to honour the farmers. He added that Ghana can grow any type of food that is imported here in Ghana if structures are put in place.
