The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) in Eastern Region, Mr. Kudjoe Daase on Radio1, 100.7’s Morning show- Susubiribi explained that the reason why GWCL had decided to embark on disconnection of pipelines nationwide is that as the year is almost elapsed and they will be rendering an account of their services as well as performance and they have noticed that most of their customers that benefit from their services have not settled their water tariffs debts.

He stated that GWCL is putting up measures that will enable them serve their customers through the prepaid system next year but since it has not be implemented yet, they have therefore allowed customers to be making use of water which  is credited to them so that they pay for it every month. He said through their records, they have notice that most of their customers are having outstanding debts in which some of them has lasted for almost two to six months. Mr. Daase said they are going to have Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with their customers on measures that will help in the paying of the tariffs that they owe GWCL and this prevent the public from making negative comments about the company.

Mr. Daase expressed that he is pleading with defaulting customers to make it a matter of necessity to comply and settle their bills because with the introduction of the new payment systems through the mobile telecommunication networks it has made payment flexible. He added that customers can also settle their bills by also going to the various banks that GWCL have linked up with so that it will help them to provide better service to the people of Ghana.

He said that his advice to the small scale miners is that as the Government is about to lift the ban, he would plead with them the miners to put up measures in their mining activities that will prevent the water bodies from getting affected because water is life.
