Cocoa farmers in Akyem Juaso in the Fanteakwa South District in the Eastern Region have disclosed that the only main road linking Osino to their town is now in a bad condition due to the illegal mining activities in the township.

In an interview with Radio 1 News, the Gyantoahene of Akyem Juaso and Cocoa Buyer, Nana Asare stated that, their road which is almost 5km was once upon a time an engineered road well-constructed which made easy commutation and transportation of goods and services for many years until these illegal miners surfaced into the community with their heavy trucks to do their illegal mining, popularly known as ‘Galamsey’.

He added that the to-and-fro movement of these heavy trucks have left the road in a deplorable state that even hawkers can no longer trade by the road sides because it’s now considered as a feeder road and people can’t stand the dust.

Mr. Asare said this has made it difficult to transport sick and pregnant women for Akyem Juaso to Osino or any hospital in the other communities, much more also uncomfortable for those sit in vehicles to the other towns.

He said the illegal miners claim that they were given the permit by the Government to come and mine in the area so they are as pleading with the Government to come and re construct their road for them. He added that they don’t know whether miners are going drive them from the town or not.

They then used the opportunity to appeal to the Government to come to their aid and do something about their road because the dust alone is  causing more harm especially as harmattan welcomes us.
