NADMO calls for legal backing to demolish weak precolonial structures in Sekondi

Following Sunday’s fire incident at the Sekondi Office of the Stool Lands Administration and Land Valuation, the Sekondi-Takoradi Metro Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), James Obeng has called for a legislation to permit NADMO to pulldown all precolonial structures in poor standing.
His concerns were buttressed by the Regional Fire Officer who said the inferno intensified by among other things, the poor state of the 100-year old pre-colonial structures.
“We’ve done research on some of these buildings within the metropolis. We’ve made recommendations and we are expecting that these buildings must go down immediately but we don’t have to sit down for some of these things to happen before we come round, set up and look at it,” James Obeng told Citi News.
The Second-in-Command for the Western Regional Fire Service, Veronica Naa Adjeley Korle, who was not happy with complaints that the fire service delayed in fighting the inferno said it might have been intensified because of the state of the precolonial structure.

“The roofing and the decking is made of wood… and the deck too was made of wood and you know the nature of the work they do there. They deal with papers and other things and they are all good combustibles when there is fire. The age [of the building] also contributed to the fire.”
The over-100-year-old office of the Stool Lands Administration and Land Valuation caught fire around 7 am on Sunday.
It took about four hours to bring the fire under control. The cause of the fire on the over 100-year-old office complex is yet to be ascertained.
The Western Regional Lands Officer, Seth Owusu, noted that some of the land documents are likely to be secured by their automatic backup system.
A lot of records and other vital documents were in the building when the fire started and it is feared that all those materials have been lost to the fire.
