We’ll Deal With Illegal Miners Destroying Water Bodies – Cecilia Dapaah

The Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah has said that a task force will soon be put together in communities where there are river bodies to protect such resources from being destroyed by illegal small scale mining activities, popularly known as galamsey.

“The few greedy individuals who are bent on destroying our water bodies will be dealt with,” the Minister said.

“We always say water is life but I don’t believe it. I say good quality water is life because if you drink dirty contaminated and polluted water, you will die and this is what we need to protect,” the sanitation Minister added.

Speaking to Citi News during a tour of the Sekyere Hemang and Bremso water works, Madam Cecilia Abena Dapaah indicated that the purpose of the visit was to access the work being done and to also make sure that the water bodies are kept clean for the use by Ghanaians.

It is also to know the challenges they are confronted with adding that all these challenges have an impact on the services provided to Ghanaians.

According to the Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, the activities of illegal mining form silt which muddies the waters and in turn blocks the machines that pump water.

This, according to the Minister, destroys the machines and comes as a cost to the state.

“We all know that his Excellency the President has launched a serious campaign against illegal mining popularly know as galamsey and we must all help to achieve success,” the Minister explained.

“You remember from the Pra river we saw evidence of some galamsey activities and I think they run away when they saw us. Either they were hinted or so but I think authorities should be alerted to prevent these activities,” Cecilia Abena Dapaah added.
