“If You Don’t Stop The Mining, We Will Protect Our Water Bodies” – Hemang Youth

The combined youth of Akyem Hemang, Dome and Gyampomani in the Fanteakwa South district in the eastern region have strongly stated that they are not going to entertain any form of ”irresponsible” mining in the community but if authorities do not stop that mining, they would be forced to protect their water bodies.

“If you don’t stop the mining, we will protect our water bodies,” Covener

The convener, Johnson Appiah, disclosed this on ”Our Land Our future” on Radio 1fm 100.7MHZ. He revealed that they are not against any form of mining that has gone through the right procedure.

“Mining Act 703 and Act 206 outlines ways by which minerials including gold should be mined, we the people of Hemang and surrounding areas will go accordingly for the betterment of the country”.

He expressed his worries on how these mining companies aim at their profits leaving the welfare of the people in the community unattended to.

”It is better they go to their towns to mine” he suggested.

He further revealed that the irresponsible ongoing mining activities might endanger water bodies that serve the town and two other nearby towns. He stressed on some of the negative impacts of mining companies in the nearby town slapped on the people during a flood as a result of their activities.
“As part of our means of curbing illegal mining in the area, we filed and sued them during the former government and won the case unfortunately for us they stood on their feet after the then government’s term of office ended” he added.

When quizzed by the host as to who permitted them to mine the gold he said the people involved always gave them unidentified person’s and responses. He added that the names withheld will soon be publicized.

”We invited the Environmental Protection Agency, Water Resources Commission and other authorities of concern and they issued cautions to the companies involved but all fell on deaf ears
