Unlike other stakeholders, the eastern regional manager for Drivers and Vehicles License Authority DVLA, Mr Sylvanus Markwei has advised government not to ever think of considering a decision to legalise the use of Motorbikes for commercial purposes in Ghana.
According to the experienced manager, per his experiences gathered from Nigeria where Okada (Motorbikes used for commercial purposes) is operational has really caused the transport ministry and believe it might be worse here when the nod is given for the motorbikes to run for commercial purposes.
He made these revelations on Dawohoso, a roadsafety program on Radio 1fm 100.7MHZ on July 12 2019 hosted by Obido Nana Gyasi.
“I’m not part of the people who decide what to do particularly when it comes to policies but me as an individual, I wouldn’t like Ghana to attempt to allow motorbikes to be used as commercial vehicles…” Mr Sylvanus Markwei opined.
According to him, when motorbikes are used for commercials in Ghana, motorbikes would outnumber the quantity of other vehicles in Ghana and this would affect our traffic system in Ghana.

Again, he revealed that the Authority does not register motorbikes to be used as commercials therefore all motorbikes used for commercials are operating illegally.
“Motorbikes by law needed to be registered and be recognised by the number that would be allocated for the motorbike. The one who would ride the motorbike needed to be registered and be given a license. We have a colour identification. To identify a motorbike and vehicle, we change the colours so immediately you see a blue background, you know it’s a motorbike”, Sylvanus Markwei revealed.
Moreover, he said by law, it is illegal in the law of the country to use motorbikes for commercial purposes. He later disclosed that in every law, there are exceptions so where the roads are not motorable, there could then be a clause to effect that.
Meanwhile, the services of the motorbikes in the country for commercial purposes is increasing. Though it is illegal, MMDCE’s tax them in their districts, municipals and metropolitans.
