A consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology, Dr Evans Agbenyo has emphasized that pregnancy is not a disease which has to claim lives.
Speaking at the launch of the 11th Health Week celebration of the University Of Cape Coast School of Medical Sciences (UCCMSA), he encouraged expectant mothers to seek help once they see an abnormality in their pregnancy and also debunked various myths surrounding pregnancy.
Under the theme “Enhancement of basic rules and commitments to eliminate maternal and neonatal mortality”, various speakers including the Dean of the School of Medical Sciences, Professor Ivy Ekem; the Provost of the College of Health and Allied Sciences, Professor Nyarko Boampong; the CEO of the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital (CCTH) who was represented by Dr. Evans Agbenyo; the head of nursing unit at the CCTH, Ms. Sophia Blankson; and the Oguaamanhene who was represented by Professor Nana Ekua Suapem Nyaniba I addressed the students.
The University of Cape Coast Medical Students’ Association (UCCMSA) is a vibrant student-led body that seeks to ensure that students do not just become doctors, but proactive leaders who make positive impact in the society.

Members of the association are committed to excellence in all endeavors, guided by a spirit of dedication and commitment to one another and to humanity. The health week celebration is a week taken off to purposefully reach out to the University’s immediate communities in terms of healthcare, as well as give the students a break from usual routine lectures.
The week continues with educative as well as fun-packed activities: a health screening and health talk at the Kotokuraba Market; a debate, ladies volleyball and a football competition, another screening specifically for hypertension and diabetes at the forecourt of the Sam-Jonah library, with a visit to the CCTH and an Excellence Awards to crown the week’s celebrations.
