Whereas a majority of people, institutions among various stakeholders are pushing for the medical and industrial legalisation of marijuana, Mr Philip Boateng, founder of Philip foundation has vehemently stated that successive governments have failed in the fight against the usage of marijuana and probably contributes to why people are yearning for its legalisation but if its for the advocacy of medical and industrial usage then it must be under stringent conditions.

According to the experience researcher, current government and its predecessors commit a little if they even do to fight substance abuse.

He made this revelation on the Susubiribi morning show on Monday October, 21 2019 when the host Nana Kwabena Addo asked of his opinion on the enormous call for marijuana (‘wee’) legalisation.

“I have done this job for over 20 years but you can’t find any sustainable program the governments past and present have initiated to prohibit people to abuse illicit drugs. Look at the psychiatric hospitals, what is the governments allocation to support those mentally affected by substance abuse. It’s unappreciated”, – Philip argued.

Though he said he would not challenge the opinions of others calling for the legalisation but he is of the view that marijuana has more adverse effects than the benefits and would not subscribe to its legalisation except under stringent monitoring for the medical and industrial purposes.

Moreover, he revealed that a lot need to be done by governments in the preceding years so as to avoid the adverse effects among the youth if ‘wee’ is legalised.

“You can quote me anywhere, government past and present has done little in drug abuse prevention in Ghana. You can call Narcotic control board to find out.” He added

Mr Philip Boateng, is of the view that if one sets up a non governmental organization, NGO to look into drug abuse prevention, that NGO would collapse because governments don’t support.
