The race to becoming the next parliamentary candidate for Atiwa West constituency seems to be very difficult for the cabinet minister who is the minister for roads and highways, Hon. Akwasi Amoako Atta as his contender, Dr Owusu Akyem vows to unseat him this time around.

Dr Owusu Akyem is of the conviction that the able minister has done virtually nothing in the constituency after ten years of being the member of parliament for the constituency and therefore does not deserve another chance to represent the constituency on the ticket of the ruling New Patriotic Party.

In a phone interview with Dr Owusu Akyem, he disclosed to Radio1News that the people of Atiwa west are crying for development, the youth and women are suffering since they have not had any impacts from the minister cum MP.

Dr Owusu Akyem cannot fathom why a district like Atiwa West can boast of only one senior High school even when the MP has spent 10 years in office and has been elevated to Road and Transport minister cum Cabinet member.

“Atiwa West is lagging far behind. They are suffering and are calling on me to come to their rescue. We are in a constituency that has only one senior high school. In a constituency where there is no district hospital. There is no helper in the constituency. Go to Kwabeng and it’s environs and see, the youth are roaming without work, women there are complaining. That’s why i have responded to the call from my constituents to come to their rescue”- Dr Akyem revealed.

The aspirant who appeared to be more confident in his submission added that if the delegates in Atiwa bestow on him the mandate to lead the constituency, he would focus on health, education and job creation to help alleviate poverty and hardships in the constituency.

“The first thing i would do is after given the nod as the MP for the constituency, i would create an MP office to take note of concerns. Again, my focus would be on 3 or 4 things which we would tackle very seriously. Health, education, creating jobs and tackling women issues. My brother has done his best but the people of Atiwa west have had no visible impacts.” – Dr Owusu Akyem added.

However, he revealed that he supported his bid in 2016 to win power but the MP has deviated from the wishes of the constituents and the fortunes do not reflect in the constituency. He also disclosed his displeasure to why people have to travel to other districts for health care.

Two aspirants are now battling for the the parliamentary candidate slot for the NPP in Atiwa West as at the time the party closed picking of forms and its filing on 20th February 2020. Vetting is expected to come off in March where election follows on April 25 2020.
