Galamsey Fight: Abuakwa South Municipal Assembly, Traditional Council, Mining Companies, et al To Hold Sensitisation Forum In Ensuring Legal And Proper Mining Activities

The Abuakwa South Municipal Assembly in the eastern region headed by Hon. kojo Ofori-Safo, MCE, in partnership with the traditional authorities of the municipal and the mining companies in the area will hold a sensitisation forum, come Thursday, 20th February 2020 following the recent reportage on the destruction of the water bodies in Ghana of which Abuakwa South is never left out by mining activities.
According to information available to Radio1News, the Authorities at the assembly, Chiefs and the mining companies including other stakeholders are determined and ever ready to manage the activities of mining in the area and make it sustainable.
“Through reportage, intelligence gathering and observation, it has become evident that mining activities ongoing in the Municipality are adversely affecting the environment”- the letter reads.
“There is persistent pollution of the water bodies as a result, especially the Almighty Birim river. It has therefore become imperative that a dialogue to find a way out before it escalates into unmanageable levels with its attendant destruction of the environment.”
In line with this, the Assembly in partnership with all the Mining companies and the Traditional Council in the Abuakwa South Municipality is organizing a public sensitization programme on Thursday 20th February, 2020 at Akyem Adukrom School Park. The all important program is said to commence at exactly 10:00am and therefore entreat all stakeholders to be available at the said time with their respective concerns in addressing the menace.

It is also important to note that everyone would be given the opportunity to share ideas on standard, best and accepted mining practices and the need to safeguard our environment while also ensuring alternative ways of livelihood including.
Representatives from EPA and the Minerals commission, Forestry Commission, would also be given the platform to engage those present.
This interactive forum is intended to bring to bear all issues regarding responsible mining practices and the way forward.
Hon. Kojo Ofori-Safo, MCE, believes the deliberations would help provide solutions to reduce the menace of mining activities in his municipal so per the letter available to Radio1News, he appeals to all to come on board to address the mining issues.
