Galamsey Fight: If Nana Addo Had Not Banned Galamsey, People would Have Mined Roads And School Parks By Now – MCE

The hardworking municipal chief executive of Abuakwa South Municipal Assembly, Hon. Kojo Ofori-Safo has commended the president of the republic of Ghana, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for at a point in time banning illegal mining in the country.

According to him, if Nana Addo had not banned the illegal mining also called galamsey, our roads and school parks would now be unclaimed; mining pits.

He made this revelation when speaking at the Public sensitisation forum in ensuring proper mining and adopting alternative livelihood program at Akyem Adukrom on 20th February 2020.

“I commend our president Nana Akufo-Addo for being proactive in banning galamsey. i am sure if he had not banned galamsey at the right time, people would have mined our roads and school parks by now. We must commend him for that initiative”- Hon. Kojo Ofori-Safo said.

The all important program which was fully patronized was organised by the assembly in collaboration with the traditional council and the mining companies in the municipality.

He used the opportunity to get on-board representatives from the Ghana Water Company Ltd, Forestry commission, Inter-ministerial committee on illegal mining, Ghana police, Small Scale miners, Immigration Service, EPA, Minerals Commission, and several concerned organisations.

Hon. Ofori-Safo exhibited samples of water taken from the Birim river which has again been polluted when the ban on small scale mining was lifted. He showed three categories of water and all gathered there testifified the destruction of the water bodies by the activities of illegal mining.

“I intentionally asked my health director to fetch me some of the water. Here is how it is. I don’t know if it is milo or chocolate’- Hon Kojo Ofori Said revealed.

He again urged the constituents to as a matter of urgency practice proper mining since illegal mining undermines the municipal and the very important personalities of the area including the president and the Okyenhene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin II.

Moreover, he took into account, the concerns of the miners and promised to have another engagement to see how best they can co-habitate peacefully.

The municipal coordinating director, Mrs Vera Akuffo-Mantey also said plans are underway to make community mining operational as soon as possible.
