Alert: Food Security In Ghana Threatened As Fall Armyworms Resurge Amid Covid-19 Pandemic

As the the globe battles with the deadly coronavirus pandemic, Ghana is hit with the resurgence of fall armyworms which pose threats to the nation’s food security and livelihood.
The ministry of food and Agriculture, MoFA has with immediate effect made a release to alert the general public particularly, the farmers that fall armyworms infestations are now endemic in Ghana. Surveillance reports indicate pockets of Fall Armyworm (FAW) infestations on maize planted in low land and irrigated fieldsin some districts in Ahafo, Ashanti, Bono, Bono East, Central,Eastern, Greater Accra and Western regions.

PUBLIC ALERT: RESURGENCE OFFALL ARMYWORM INFESTATIONS
Fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) is now an endemic pest in Ghana and will continue to pose a serious threat to food security and livelihood of thousands of smallholder maize farmers.Surveillance reports indicate pockets of Fall Armyworm (FAW) infestations on maize planted in low land and irrigated fieldsin some districts in Ahafo, Ashanti, Bono, Bono East, Central, Eastern, Greater Accra and Western regions.
Farmers are being informed to monitor their fields frequently just after seed emergence for early detection of signs and symptoms of FAW infestation and implement the necessary management options at the vulnerable stages of the larvae
Farmers and general public are to report FAW infestations to the nearest Department of Agric. Office, Agricultural Extension Agents or PPRSD Head Office, Pokuase, Accrafor advice by providing the following information:
§ Location: District/Community
§ Date and time of observation
§ Estimated area infested
As part of corporate social responsibility, TV Stations, FM Radio Stations and Community Information Centers are kindly requested to create awareness of the presence ofFAW and its threat to food security and the livelihood of smallholder farmers in maize producing communities in Ghana.
