Breaking News: Anyinam Residents In Bloody Clash With Illegal Miners, One Arrested

The fight against illegal mining in Ghana appears not to end soon as there are twists in operation as each new day unfolds.

On Saturday morning, the residents of Anyinam, the district capital of Atiwa East in the eastern, the traditional authorities and the operation vanguard stormed a mining site in Anyinam to halt the illegal mining activities popularly known as galamsey.

This resulted in a give and take between the police and the miners. Many people fled including some of the traditional authorities. As galamseyers threaten to kill anyone who steps on their way to halt their activity, there were exchange of gunshots and one glamseyer was arrested. Two guns were seized and several dashboards too. Though many fled, the few that were left behind were in heated exchange of words even as a few sustained mild injuries.

The residents were angered since these Galamseyers were polluting their major source of water in the area, ‘Almighty Birim’.

While the arrested were taken to the police station, the rest attacked the elders of the land.

Soon after the arrest, one Isaac Anokye, government’s spokesperson and member of the eastern regional communication team together with the presiding member of Atiwa East arrived and claimed they were sent by the District Chief Executive to look into what is really going on.

The illegal miners were working illegally on a legal concession belonging to one Ibrahim Mohammed popularly called Rasta in the area. The youth of the town have seized his concession threaten him severally and all attempts to get back his site are not yielding anything.
