Covid-19(AUDIO): Abuakwa South Readies For Market Disinfection Exercise – MCE Discloses

Pursuant to the directives from the ministry of local government and rural development, which entreats all MMDCEs to make provisions for fumigation, the municipal chief executive, MCE for Abuakwa South in the eastern region, Hon. Kojo Ofori-Safo has disclosed their readiness follow the directives.

According to the able MCE, the assembly has already made announcements to disinfect four big markets in the municipality come Saturday April 4 2020 to display their readiness to combat the deadly coronavirus pandemic.

Asiakwa market, Apedwa market, Kyebi market and Asafo market are the four markets that would be disinfected as diclosed by the MCE.

Speaking on phone with Radio 1FM, 100.7MHZ, Hon. Kojo Ofori-Safo said they have really prepared to prevent the virus from entering the municipal.

“We have made provisions to spray some markets in the municipal. Asiakwa market, Apedwa market, Asafo market and Kyebi market are the places to be fumigated on saturday 4th April 2020. We are trying to spray where the markets are big and a lot of crowd go there for market to clamp down any virus connected to the structures over there. In a maximum of two hours, we will finish every market place so tomorrow by 7:00am-8:00am, we will start.” – Hon. Kojo Ofori-Safo revealed.

However, the MCE is of the view that the exercise would help delay and contain the deadly virus from the municipality and therefore urged all market women to comply and ensure the safety of anything they would leave behind during the exercise.

When asked when the communication has gone down well with the traders, Hon. MCE said they used the queen mothers to speak with the market women and later used their information van to make the announcements in the various towns that would be affected.

“We first sent letters to the queen mothers of the towns to engage the market women and as i speak with you now, our information van is going through the various towns to remind them of the exercise so they don’t leave behind their valuables” – MCE added.

Though no case of the pandemic is reorded in the municipality, eastern region has recorded one case in the Lower Manya municipal Assembly.

SITUATION UPDATE, CONFIRMED COVID-19 CASES IN GHANA AS AT 02 APRIL 2020, 14:00HRS

Since the last situational update, Ghana has confirmed nine additional COVID-19 cases, all from Greater Accra region. Four (4) of them have no history of travel nor contact with any confirmed case. Other four (4) have no travel history but are contacts of confirmed cases in Ghana; and one travelled to Ghana from Benin within the past 14 days.

As at 2 nd April 2020, Ghana has recorded 204 cases COVID-19 with five (5) deaths. The number of regions reporting cases remain five (5) (Greater Accra, Ashanti, Northern, Upper West and Eastern). The Greater Accra Region has most of the cases (183) followed by the Northern Region (10), Ashanti Region (9), Upper West Region (1) and Eastern Region (1).

Most of the cases are reported from routine / enhanced surveillance activities. Cases from travellers under mandatory quarantine remain 89.
