Danger!: “we are fighting Coronavirus, but Malaria kills too” as 3,000 slum dwellers displaced in Accra – Jato

Information reaching AHOTOR (92.3) news reveals that, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) in partnership with the Sanitation Ministry has embark on a Demolition exercise at slum prone areas within the greater Accra region, specifically at Old Fadama, in the Odododiodoo constituency.
The action by government has been initiated at a time where the country is battling to find measures to curb the novel coronavirus pandemic, amid a partial lockdown , of the Greater Accra region, Kumasi, Tema and Kasoa in the central region.
The country director of the Amnesty International, local Chapter, Robert Akoto Amoafo has described the move as highly unpardonable, and also questioned why government is embarking on such expedition taken into cognisance of the threat pose by the covid 19, as well as government call on the CITIZENS to observe hygienic protocols, and social distance.
Government on the other hand has justified the Demolition exercise. Reacting to questions in the media the deputy Minister for Sanitation, HON. Michael Jato said government has done no wrong to carry out an exercise which is intended to protect the interest of the ordinary citizens.

He emphasized that, soon the rains would set in, and if steps are not taken to dredge the odaw river, the capital risk facing an imminent outbreak of malaria.
The Minister told Accra based class FM that, though he is aware of the dreadful coronavirus pandemic which has currently brought brisk activities in the capital city of Accra into a standstill, and urge the public not to overlooked the dangers associated with Malaria fever, as well.
Mr. Jato maintained that, the dwellers have not been evicted as being portrayed by the Media, and that alternative shelters would be made available by authorities to housed the embattled slum dwellers who have been displaced as a result of the Demolition.
