The extent at which water pollution has astronomically increased in Ghana is so high that the quality and quantity of water used in Ghana is under threat such that water supply is in ration.
Even as there are many factors leading to the water pollution in Ghana, Dr Francis Awotwi, Dean of Students at the University College of Agriculture and Environmental studies in Ghana has revealed that a major cause of water pollution in the country is by the activity of the illegal miners popularly called Galamsey.
In a one-on-one interview with Dr Awotwi, he revealed that there are several times these miners have been arrested but later find them walking around and even going back to the mining.
He further added that these miners are now mining directly in the rivers and that has even resulted in unavailability of water in the surrounding communities.

He recounted times that people result to fighting the galamseyers but “till when can it go?” he said.
He therefore advised the Environmental Protection Agency, (EPA) to be firm and act promptly for our water bodies are gradually being destroyed.
He reiterated that the fight against galamsey has failed and he doesn’t believe the government can do anything about it unless government allows the system to work.
