Residents of the eastern regional capital, Koforidua and its environs are no more able to access treated water from the Ghana Water Company Limited, GWCL and are therefore denied of the president’s three months stimulus package of free water supply for all households.
The few households who are fortunate to have water from the the GWCL are also supplied in ration. The ration affects all communities in the Koforidua township whereas towns around Bunso, Osino, Nsutam, Osiem, Kade, Asuom, etc are not getting water at all.
In an interview with the eastern regional PRO of the GWCL, Kwadwo Daase, he revealed that there are major factors affecting the water treatments in the area. He mentioned the extent at which illegal mining has polluted the water bodies, especially the Birim river which is their main source of water.
According to him, they had a challenge at Koforidua but have now rectified and that everything is in order for constant flow.

However, Kwadwo Daase added that the demand for water is also on the in crease and for that reason they have resulted to water rationing. Some will have theirs in the morning, some in the afternoon, some in the evening and others even at dawn.
Morever, he said some residents also lock their corks which makes them unaware when there is water flowing.
Mr Kwadwo Daase was quick to add that communities living around Bunso and Osino would not benefit from the Government’s stimulus package of three months free water supply since their major source of water is polluted by the mining activies currently ongoing where the turbidity is so high that they always have to shut down their machines in attempt to treat the water.
He therefore appealed to residents to use the water wisely and save water.
