Flood: One Hour Downpour In Accra Leaves Residents Displaced And Many Properties Lost

After about an hour downpour in the capital city of Ghana, Accra, many suburbs close to odaw river have been adversely affected as the odaw overflows to displace many residents and destroy a lot of properties.

On Tuesday dawn, June 9 2020 around 3 am, the one hour downpour affected residents of Alajo, Avenor, Tesano, circle.

As residents deeply cry for losing their domestic properties, business men also revealed how the are stranded especially taxi drivers and store owners.

In an interview with some victims, they disclosed that even when the rain had not started, they realised that the odaw river had overflown and approaching their homes so they quickly moved some of their properties outside and placed them on roofs of buildings for safety first. Since then they have not been able to sleep.

As at the time of reporting, residents are unable to come from homes to work even as some are in the flood looking for their properties carried away by the flood.

Flood in Accra has been a yearly ritual which is mostly attributed to choked gutters. A sad one which occurred 5 years ago. On June 3, 2015, a GOIL fuel station near Kwame Nkrumah Interchange was burnt with people and vehicles in the vicinity. The fire also burnt a Forex Bureau and Pharmacy nearby. Over 200 people were affected.
