NPP Primaries: 4 Ghost Names Vote In Akwatia Constituency – MP Alleges

As part of preparation towards the December general elections in Ghana, the ruling New Patriotic Party, NPP holds parliamentary primaries in all the constituencies where the party has incumbent members of parliament.

For 168 constituencies, though the process was marred with controversies in some few areas, in general, it was a peaceful process.

In Akwatia constituency in the eastern region, the female member of parliament, Hon. Mercy Adu Gyamfi popularly known as Ama Sey lost the elction by 4 votes and has subsequently rejected the results alleging that the process wasn’t fair.

At the end of the contest on June 20 2020, Hon. Ama Sey gannered 223 votes lost to Lawyer Ernest Kumi who got 227 votes. The others, Lawyer Bernard Owiredu had 77 votes while Robert Ampratwum got 13 votes which meant the incumbent MP, Hon. Ama Sey loses the opportunity to be the parliamentary candidate for December 7 polls.

However, Hon. Ama Sey who rejected the results said there were four names in the albums who are reportedly dead, yet they voted in the primaries. For this reason, her lawyers would take informed decision to seek justice at the competent courts of jurisdiction.

The seat of Akwatia constituency has been one of the swinging seats in parliament as it changes between NPP and NDC. Hon. Ama Sey, a beautician snatched the seat from lawyer Baba Jamal of NDC in 2016.

Elections in this constituency has also been marred with a lot of controversies and will this one be the same? Time will tel!
